India’s industrial production up 3.8% in September

Industrial production based on the general index of industrial production (IIP) expanded 3.8 per cent year-on-year in September 2017 against a 2.5 per cent growth recorded in September last year. Quick estimates of IIP released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed.

Industrial production recorded a cumulative growth of 2.5 per cent for April-September 2017 period.

Production in the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors recorded growth rates of 7.9 per cent, 3.4 per cent and 3.4 per cent for September 2017. The three sectors recorded cumulative growth rates of 3.9 per cent, 1.9 per cent and 5.7 per cent, respectively, during April-September 2017.

Eleven out of the 23 industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during September 2017.

The industry group 'manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products' has shown the highest positive growth of 26.4 per cent, followed by 'manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products' 13.2 per cent and 'manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers' 13.1 per cent.

On the other hand, the industry group 'other manufacturing' has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 27.1 per cent, followed by 'manufacture of tobacco products' (-) 23.1 per cent and 'manufacture of electrical equipment' (-) 19.2 per cent.

Production of primary goods increased by 6.6 per cent in September 2017 while capital goods production increased by 7.4 per cent, intermediate goods production grew 1.9 per cent and infrastructure/construction goods production expanded 0.5 per cent.

Production of consumer durables and consumer non-durables recorded growth rates of (-) 4.8 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.
