Industrial production in India grows 5.9% in May

Industrial production in India grew at 5.9 per cent year-on-year in May 2024 compared to a growth  of 5.7 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year. 

The three major industrial sector s - Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity – recirded growth rates of 6.6 per cent, 4.6 per cent and 13.7 per cent, respectively. 

Within the manufacturing sector, basic metals (7.8 per cent), pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemicals and botanical products (7.5 per cent), and  electrical equipment (14.7 pr cent) were the main contributors to the growth in industrial production.

Production of primary goods increased by 7.3 per cent in May 2024 while   capital goods production increased by 2.5 per cent, production of intermediate goods by 2.5 per cent and production of infrastructure/ construction goods by 6.9 per cent.

Consumer goods production increased by 12.3 per cent in May 2024 while production of consumer non-durables increased by 2.3 per during the month.
