Inflation rate fractionally lower at 9.59 per cent in April

The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index (WPI) for April 2010 stood lower at 9.59 per cent (provisional) against 9.90 per cent (provisional) in the previous month.

The WPI-based inflation rate stood at 1.31 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year. 

The official wholesale price index for 'all commodities' (base: 1993-94 = 100) rose 1.2 per cent to 253.7 (provisional) during April 2010 from 250.8 (provisional) in the previous month.

The index for the `primary articles' group rose 2.3 per cent to 289.7 (provisional) from 283.2 (provisional) in the previous month.

Among the primary articles group, the index for the 'food articles' group rose 2.8 per cent to 292.4 (provisional) from 284.4 (provisional) in the previous month due to higher prices of fish-marine and moong (5 per cent each), urad (4 per cent), milk (3 per cent), condiments and spices (2 per cent) and arhar, maize, ragi, barley, pork, gram, fish-inland and jowar (1 per cent each). However, the prices of wheat and masur (-3 per cent each), tea and eggs (-2 per cent each) and bajra (-1 per cent) declined.

The index for the 'non-food articles' group rose 0.7 per cent to 256.1 (provisional) from 254.4 (provisional) in the previous month due to higher prices of raw rubber (9 per cent), logs and timber (5 per cent), castor seed (4 per cent), skins (raw) (2 per cent) and groundnut seed, raw silk, tanning materials, raw jute and mesta (1 per cent each). However, the prices of fodder (-9 per cent), hides (raw) and niger seed (-4 per cent each), copra (-3 per cent), tobacco (-2 per cent) and linseed and rape and mustard seed (-1 per cent each) declined.
