Monsoon to cover northwest India in next 10 days: Met Dept

29 Jun 2010

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its forecasts on the monsoon saying rainfall in the second stage of the southwest monsoon is likely to be normal.

The forecast predicts a rainfall of 98% and 101% of the long-period average (LPA) in July and August. In the northwest and northeast, rainfall is likely to be 102% and 103% of LPA.

The Met Department is also forecasting a high probability of La Nina conditions developing. La Nina is characterized by colder-than-normal sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. It can change world weather patterns and affect crop development.

Commenting on the same, Ajit Tyagi, DG, Meteorological Department, expects monsoon to cover the northwest India in the next 10 days. He expects 98% rainfall in July and feels the second half of monsoon rains will be better than the first half. "Rainfall in July and August will be stable and distributed."
