TMC workers clash with cops, barricade roads over Mitra arrest

Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers organised processions and put up road blocks at various places in Kolkata and its suburbs over the week end protesting against the arrest of West Bengal transport minister Madan Mitra by Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam.

TMC workers clashed with West Bengal police outside Alipore court where transport minister Madan Mitra was produced on Saturday. Mitra got a hero's welcome at the court, news channels reported.

Mitra's residential area at Bhawanipore in southern part of the metropolis witnessed a long procession by his supporters protesting against his arrest.

The supporters put up road blocks in the area strongly criticising the ruling BJP government at the Centre.

Belgachia area in the northern part of the metropolis also witnessed a similar procession.

Also there were a number of processions and road blocks under Mitra's constinuency of Kamarhati in North 24-Parganas district.

Road blocks were withdrwan later after the police intervened, police said.
