EaseMyTrip suspends Maldives flight bookings amid diplomatic tensions

08 Jan 2024

In a bold move showcasing solidarity with India, EaseMyTrip has announced the suspension of all flight bookings to the Maldives. The decision comes in the wake of controversial remarks made by the Maldivian ministers regarding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep Island.

EaseMyTrip CEO Nishant Pitti took to social media platform X on Sunday, 7 January 2024, to announce that EaseMyTrip intends to showcase its solidarity with India and suspend all Maldives flight bookings. Co-founder Prashant Pitti responded to the tweet, revealing plans to introduce special offers to promote Lakshadweep islands. He emphasized that the water and beaches of Lakshadweep are on par with popular destinations like the Maldives and Seychelles.

The diplomatic rift stems from the contrasting views of the former Maldives President, who considered India a key ally, and the current President, Mohamed Muizzu, who campaigned against Indian ties, favoring closer connections with China. Following Muizzu’s victory, Indian troops were promptly withdrawn from the country.

Tensions escalated when Maldivian ministers mocked PM Modi’s Lakshadweep visit. Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) council member Zahid Rameez belittled India’s tourism offerings, labeling them “delusional” and questioning their ability to compete.

Rameez remained unapologetic, despite facing criticism. Maldives' Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, Mariyam Shiuna, made a derogatory comment about PM Modi, referring to him as “the puppet of Israel.” Colleague Malsha Sharif joined in, highlighting the beauty of a Maldivian sunset in contrast to Lakshadweep.

Attempting to mitigate the fallout, the Maldivian government distanced itself from the comments, stating that the opinions expressed were personal and did not represent the official views of the Government of India. The controversy has triggered discussions on social media, with the hashtag #BoycottMaldives gaining traction. The impact on diplomatic relations between the two nations remains uncertain.
