Justice Mishra gets added security after death threat

08 Aug 2015

Heavy security arrangements have been made for Justice Dipak Misra after he received an anonymous threating letter. These include a bullet proof vehicle and commandos from central paramilitary force have been deployed around his residence.

Justice Misra headed the bench Supreme Court panel, which rejected the plea of the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon, leading to his execution.

The Delhi Police have registered a case after a threat letter was found near the rear entrance of the judge's house at Tughlak Road on Wednesday. The letter said Justice Misra will be targeted even if his security is increased.

Justice Misra's normal security officers were doing a security check when they found the letter. Senior police officers were immediately informed. Special Commissioner (law and order) Deepak Mishra visited his residence and did a security audit, police said.

It is believed that those behind threat letter did a recce of Misra's residence.

Soon after the three-bench gave the verdict, the security of three judges was increased.

Memon was convicted in 2007 for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts in which 257 people were killed. Charges of financing the terror attacks that were masterminded by his older brother Tiger Memon and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim were levelled against him.

In 2013, the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence. A mercy petition filed by his brother on his behalf was turned down by President Pranab Mukherjee.

He was hanged on 30 July after a night of unprecedented legal action. In the days leading up to the execution, several pleas of relief to him were filed and rejected.

His lawyers and activists had claimed that since he had cooperated with investigators, he should have been spared the death penalty.
