Govt extends date for fresh applications under PLI scheme for textiles till 31 December

09 Dec 2023

The central government has extended the last date for submitting fresh applications under the PLI scheme for textiles through an online portal to 31 December 2023. Union minister of state for textiles, Darshana Jardosh, gave this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday

Under the PLI scheme for textiles, focusing on manmade fibre (MMF) apparel, fabrics and technical textiles, 64 selected applicants are expected to set up 84 units in 14 states and 1 union territory. These include one in Odisha and 10 in Maharashtra.

Manmade fibre products (fibre, yarn, fabrics, made-ups and readymade garments) have a large share in the total textiles and apparel (including handicrafts) exports from India.

MMF, which includes viscose, polyester, and acrylic that are made from chemicals, currently accounts for a fifth of India’s apparel exports, according to exporters.

The industry is gearing up to tap the potential of the MMF and technical textiles segment, which is a sunrise industry segment in the country. The PLI scheme is duly supported by the PLI Scheme for Textiles and the National Technical Textiles Mission.

The government has already made the PLI scheme for textiles more attractive by offering greater flexibility, to attract more private investors and bolster manufacturing in the labour-intensive sector.

The scheme, with a budgetary outlay of Rs10,683 crore, was expanded by adding more product lines. The scheme was launched two years ago to boost the domestic manufacturing of man-made fabric (MMF) garments and technical textiles.
