G20 leaders look to Doha round trade talks for action
26 Sep 2009
Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies turned their attention to the long-running world trade talks and promised quick action to bring the Doha round to a successful end.
"We have agreed to work for an early conclusion of the Doha round of trade negotiation," prime minister Manmohan Singh said at the end of the G20 summit in Pittsburg, US.
A deal would, however, cling on the US and the emerging economies of China, India, Brazil, Russia, Mexico etc agreeing to open up market for US manufacturing and farm products further.
The Obama administration says big emerging countries should open up more to create enough support in the US Congress to win approval of a deal.
Washington, in fact, said it needs to do one-to-one talks with big emerging countries like Brazil, India and China to get more clarity about what it would gain from a deal.
The G20 summit in Pittsburgh was aimed at putting the world on a path to more sustainable growth following the worst economic downturn in decades.
