Isolate nations backing terror, Modi tells G20

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for action against terrorists and countries that back terror and also presented a 10-point agenda to fight terrorism at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Hamburg.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi JinpingModi who is in Hamburg for the G20 summit where he is meeting with leaders from several countries, said ''Terrorism is the biggest challenge that we are facing today,'' and that international response to deal with the menace has been muted.

He thanked German Chancellor Angela Merkel for choosing the topic and also welcomed the G20 plan of action on counter terrorism and presented a 10-points action plan to fight it.

''PM leads the way on one of the gravest issues of our times, is lead speaker on the theme of terrorism at Leaders Retreat,'' ministry of external affairs tweeted,

The prime minister urged world leaders to make concrete efforts against those providing safe-havens to terrorists.

Modi also made a veiled dig at Pakistan and its supporter China, saying that some nations are using terrorism to achieve political gains. He also said the representatives of such countries, which support terrorism, must be banned from the G-20 Summit.

Prime minster Modi and also came face to face with Chinese President Xi in Hamburg, and complimented each other for fight against terror, despite border row.

Addressing the G20 meeting, Modi stressed that it is important to deter countries that support terrorism. He also presented a 10-point agenda to fight the menace of global terrorism. The 10-point plan includes:

  • Exchange list of terrorists among G-20 countries;
  • Simplify legal processes like extradition and expedite process of bring terrorists to justice;
  • Fast-track adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism;
  • Implement UNSC resolutions and other international processes;
  • Exchange of best practices and collective efforts in G20 towards de-radicalisation programmes;
  • Closure of various sources of terror funding by exercising international law;
  • Formation of a Weapons and Explosive Action Task Force (WEATF) on the lines of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to close supply of weapons to terrorists;
  • Make cyber security among G-20 nations safe from terrorist activities;
  • Form G20 mechanism of national security advisors (NSAs) on counter terrorism; and
  • Ban countries which support terrorism from G-20 Summit.
