A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale today hit Haryana and surrounding areas and the tremors were felt as far as Delhi and other parts of northern India. The tremors, which lasted for about one minute, shook Delhi and neighbouring areas in the National Capital Region around 4:25 am.

The epicentre of the quake was Rohtak district in Haryana, according to the Meteorological department. The US Geological Survey reported that the quake measured 4.9 on the Richter scale and the epicentre of the earthquake was in Gohana, Haryana.

The depth of the quake was 22 km, and, according to the Met report, tremors of 3.2 magnitude were felt again in Rohtak, at 8:13 am, after the quake hit Delhi and adjoining areas.

The tremors were termed as 'moderate' on the IMD's scale. There were no immediate reports of any loss of life or damage to property.

Delhi and parts of north India are known to be part of a zone prone to high impact quakes. Seismologists have long warned that a major earthquake (of magnitude 8 or above) is pending in these parts because of latent, unreleased stress.

Authorities have advised people to stay indoors until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.
