16 Jul 2012

The television journalist who allegedly orchestrated the molestation of a teenage girl outside a Guwahati bar last week, yesterday resigned, "in the interests of the investigation and morality."

Meanwhile the state police arrested three more persons on allegations of involvement in the incident.

Confirming the resignation of Gaurav Jyoti Neog, who has been charged by RTI activist Akhil Gogoi of orchestrating the incident, Nitumoni Saikia, executive editor of NewsLive, said, ''We strongly deny the charges, but in the intervening period Gaurav tendered his resignation in the interest of a free and fair trial.''

The journalist said in a statement on his Facebook page: ''As a journalist, I took the footage... It is by dint of those visuals that the culprits have been identified... I became a victim of a big conspiracy.''

Gogoi met Assam Police director general Jayanta Narayan Choudhury on Saturday and handed over some video footage, which, according to him contained evidence to prove Neog's involvement.

Meanwhile, following the arrest of three more persons yesterday, seven of the 12 accused have been arrested so far.
