Auto industry continues to improve performance: SIAM

According to a Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) report, the cumulative production data for April-August 2009 shows production growth of 11.23 percent over same period last year.

Domestic sales
Passenger vehicles segment during April-August 2009 grew at 11.97 percent over same period last year. Passenger cars grew by 13.47 percent, utility vehicles grew marginally by -0.10 percent and multi purpose vehicles grew by 22.67 percent in this period, the report said.

The overall commercial vehicles segment still registered negative growth at (-) 2.19 percent during April-August 2009 as compared to the same period last year. While medium and heavy commercial vehicles registered de-growth at (-) 23.54 percent, light commercial vehicles grew at 21.75 percent.

Three wheelers sales recorded a growth rate of 12.09 percent in April-August 2009. While passengerc carriers grew by 20.93 percent during April-August 2009, goods carriers declined at (-) 13.16 percent.

Two wheelers registered a growth of 17.70 percent during April-August 2009. Mopeds, scooters and motorcycles grew by 24.56 percent, 20.52 percent and 17.11 percent respectively. Electric two wheelers segment registered a growth rate of (-) 76.60 percent.

Medium and heavy commercial vehicles and goods three wheelers remained areas of concern for the industry.

Exports
During April-August 2009, all segments except passenger vehicles registered de-growth. Overall automobile exports registered a growth rate of 3.18 percent.

Commercial vehicles, three wheelers and two wheelers segments recorded growth of (-) 38.26 percent, (-) 7.12 percent and (-) 3.36 percent respectively during April-August 2009. Passenger vehicles segment, however, grew by 37.52 percent in this period.
