Though the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not yet received a formal request from the defence ministry to probe the Adarsh housing society scam, it is learnt to be gearing up to file a case in the matter, which resulted in unseating Maharashtra chief minister, Ashok Chavan.

On 9 November defense minister A K Antony had announced a CBI probe into the housing society scam after media reports pointed to several irregularities in the allotment of apartments.

The irregularities allegedly involve several politicians as also senior army officials.

While Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan had to step down over his alleged role, former army chiefs Deepak Kapoor and NC Vij are also facing charges.

Even as the investigating agency awaits a formal request to being the probe, it is said to be conducting the ground work for launching the investigation.

According to official sources, apart from the society, the CBI is seeking documents relating to the society from various departments of the government including the navy and the army.
