CBI to investigate murder of Madhya Pradesh police officer

13 Mar 2012

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today announced that the government would hand over the probe into the killing of IPS officer Narendra Singh to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The young IPS officer was crushed to death by a tractor allegedly by the 'mining mafia' in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh on 8 March.

The opposition Congress had stalled the proceedings of the House and forced an adjournment demanding a CBI probe into the officer's death as also of illegal mining activities in the state (See: Slain MP cop was fighting a lone battle, says father).

"We respect the wishes of the family of the IPS officer. His wife and IPS officer Madhurani Teotia wanted a CBI probe. We have decided to write to the centre to handover the probe into the circumstances led to his death to the CBI", Chouhan told the media in the assembly premises after a brief adjournment to the proceedings of the house.

In an unprecedented move, opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha today stalled debate on its own notice for adjournment motion on the killing of IPS officer Narendra Kumar by the "mining mafia" in Morena district, demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the circumstances leading the officer's death as also into the alleged rampant illegal mining activities in the state.

"It's perhaps for the first time in Parliamentary and legislative history that the opposition is not allowing debate on an adjournment motion, moved by them. It's unprecedented", speaker Ishwardas Rohani observed as the opposition legislators trooped into the well of the house, raising slogans and pressing for a CBI inquiry.
