Century partially suspends tyre yarn production at Kalyan plant

Century Textiles & Industries Ltd today announced a partial suspension of tyre yarn production at its Century Rayon plant in Kalyan, near Mumbai, in stages beginning 21 May 2010.

The suspension of production of viscose filament yarn and tyre yarn, in the wake of a fall in market demand and adverse market scenario, will result in a 25 per cent fall in viscose yarn capacity utilisation, Century said in a filing with the Bombay Stock exchange (BSE).

Century said its management will closely monitor the situation to restore operation at an appropriate time. In the neantime the company will undertake preventive maintenance of the tyre cord plant and equipment, the release said.

Century Rayon, which makes rayon, tyre cord and chemicals, had an annual installed capacity of 25,000 tonnes of textile and tyre yarn as of end-March 2009.

Besides, the company's chemicals division manufactures caustic soda, sulphuric acid, carbon-di-sulphide, liquid chlorine, hydrochloric acid and compressed hydrogen.

Operations of the rayon yarn and chemicals divisions will continue unaffected, Century said.
