CWG scam: CBI files fresh case, conducts sweeping raids

02 May 2012

In further evidence that the government is serious about bringing the culprits in the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam to book, the Central Bureau of Investigation today registered a fresh case in connection with the scandal-ridden preparations for the games; and carried out searches at 20 locations.

Searches were still going on at 20 locations across the Delhi National Capital Region, Kolkata and Siliguri, CBI officials told sections of the media.

The search locations include residential premises of officials of the Central Public Works Dept, the Delhi Development Authority and the premises of a private sports equipment company, Shiv Naresh.

The latest case relates to contracts for laying synthetic tracks in five stadia for the games, which were supposed to be Delhi's showpiece but turned into an international joke due to the shoddily handled preparations. The CBI says the synthetic track contracts alone caused a loss of about Rs30 crore to the exchequer.

"A case has been registered against the CPWD, the DDA and sports company Shiv Naresh," the official added.

Further details were not immediately available.
