CWG scam: Mahendroo out on bail as CBI fails again

15 Jan 2011

The Delhi high court today granted bail to former Commonwealth Games organising committee (OC) official Sanjay Mahendroo, who was arrested on alleged charges of corruption during the Queen's Baton Relay in London in 2009.

Mahendroo's bail was granted on the conditions that he not leave the country or meet witnesses. His plea was accepted a day after another co-accused OC official, T S Darbari, was released on bail against a personal and surety bond of Rs50,000 each.

The duo's bail pleas were accepted by the court as the Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the case, failed to file chargesheet against them within the 60 days prescribed under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Both Darbari and Mahendroo were close aides of OC chief Suresh Kalmadi, the main accused in the games scam.

Meanwhile, the bail plea of another co-accused, OC joint director (finance) M Jayachandran, will be heard on Monday. He too will be granted bail if the CBI manages fails to chargesheet him by 20 January.

Darbari and Mahendroo were arrested in November for alleged siphoning of funds in the name of expenditure for Queen's Baton Relay.
