Dish TV to bring Al Jazeera English broadcasts to India

Independent international broadcaster Al Jazeera English, owned by the state of Qatar through the Qatar Media Corporation,  was today launched across India on Dish TV.  Al Jazeera English will reach 11.7 million households across India and will be available to over 48 million individuals  on Dish TV's family pack tier on Channel 618

A Dish TV statement said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh welcomed Al Jazeera English during a meeting with the channels's managing director Al Anstey and India bureau chief Anmol Saxena, saying.

The statement quoted the primr minister as saying ''Al Jazeera is gaining quite a reputation worldwide. I wish them success for their launch in India.''

Al Jazeeral launched in 1996, shot into prominence for its coverage of the West's war in Afghanistan and invasion of Iraq.Ten years later the channel introduced the English news channel.

Al Anstey, managing director, Al Jazeera English, said,  ''India is an emerging leader in today's globalised world, and a critical country for Al Jazeera English to broadcast across. We are confident that our coverage will be of enormous interest and value to audiences across India.

Al Jazeera English has over 70 bureaus around the world which span six different continents. Since being established in 2006, it has continued to grow in reach and popularity due to its global coverage, especially from underreported regions.

The international news provider has operated a bureau in New Delhi since it was set up in 2006.
