Department of Telecom under the union ministry of communications has granted approval to 42 companies, including 28 MSMEs, under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Telecom and Networking Products, in a major boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Out of this 17 companies have applied for additional incentive of 1 per cent under design-led manufacturing criteria. These 42 companies have committed investment of Rs4,115 crore. This is expected to generate additional sales of Rs2.45 lakh crore and create additional employment of more than 44,000 over the scheme period.
Union Budget for FY2022-23 had announced design-led PLI Scheme for telecom and networking products, in order to create a robust domestic value chain. It provided for additional incentive of 1 per cent over and above the existing incentives for products that are designed and manufactured in India.
Design-led PLI scheme was launched in June 2022 and applications were invited from manufacturers as well as others, for availing incentive under the PLI Scheme for five years commencing 1 April 2022.
The existing companies under PLI scheme for telecom and networking products were allowed to add more products and apply under design led PLI scheme. They were also given the benefit of shifting their 5-year PLI Scheme period by one year. Twenty-two companies availed this opportunity of shifting their first year, which include 13 companies that have applied as fresh applicants.
The enthusiastic response from domestic and global and domestic manufacturers to the PLI scheme indicates strong confidence of investors – a sign that India is poised to emerge as design and manufacturing hub for telecom and networking equipment, says the telecom ministry.
