Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food expands dog food recall

07 Mar 2017

Evanger's Dog & Cat Food has expanded its voluntary recall after euthanasia drug pentobarbital was found in cans.

The company has included Braised Beef and Against the Grain's Pulled Beef products over possible exposure to the euthanasia drug. The company had originally recalled its Hunk of Beef canned food last month (See: US pet foods company recalls dog food over presence of pentobarbital).

The FDA said the cans carried manufacturing dates between December 2015 and January 2017, and had expiration dates of December 2019 through January 2021.

The voluntary recall affected only Hand Packed Beef Products, which was a unique method in which large chunks of meat are manually placed into the can by hand, not machine.

In February, the company had recalled 12-ounce cans of its "Hunk of Beef Au Jus" after a lot was found contaminated with the euthanasia drug.

Five dogs had taken ill and one of them died after consuming the product.

The company said its recalls were  step towards an abundance of caution.

Customers who may have purchased any of the products could return them for a full refund.
