Exports continue to propel Scotch whisky sales to new highs

12 Sep 2011

Exports of Scotch whisky grew by over 20 per cent in the first six months of the year, fuelled particularly by a spectacular rise in exports to Asia and Latin America, according to figures released by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) on Saturday.

Global shipments were worth £1.8 billion (Rs13,273.2 crore) between January and June this year, up from £1.47 billion in the same period of 2010.

The USA remains the top export market by value, with shipmentsup 14 per cent to £268 million from £233.7 million. France, the second most valuable market, rose by 13 per cent to £220 million.

But sales in emerging markets in Asia and South America are growing at a more spanking pace, with rises of 33 per cent and 49 per cent respectively. Shipments to Central and South America reached £214 million, a 49-per cent jump on the same period last year. Sales to Brazil alone rose by 56 per cent to £45 million.

The statistics show Taiwan has now become a top-five market destination, with shipments growing to £70 million from £48 million. Shipments to Brazil rose by 56 per cent to £44.8 million.

India too is a growing consumer of scotch, driven by ever-rising incomes. Exports to India had risen 46 per cent, according to a very similar SWA report released at the end of February.
