Forex inflow to India through tourism rises 25.4% to $1.9 bn in May

India's foreign exchange earnings from tourists arriving through airports across the country during May 2017 stood at $1.924 billion compared to $1.534 billion during May 2016 and $1.491 billion in May 2015 - rising by 25.4 per cent in May 2017 and by 2.9 per cent in may 2016, respectively.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourists during January-May 2017 stood at $11.199 billion, showing a growth of 21.3 per cent over $9.231 billion in January-May 2016, which in turn was up 6.0 per cent over the earnings in January- May 2015.

In rupee terms earnings from tourist arrivals in India in May 2017 stood at Rs12,403 crore compared to Rs10,260 crore in May 2016 and Rs9,505 crore in May 2015, showing growth rates of 20.9 per cent and 7.9 per cent, respectively.

Foreign exchange earnings from foreign tourists during January-May 2017 stood at Rs74,008 crore, up 19.2 per cent compared to the earnings of Rs62,072 crore in January-May 2016, which in turn grew 14.0 percent over January- May 2015.

The ministry of tourism estimates monthly foreign exchange earnings through tourism in India - both in rupee and dollar terms - based on the credit data of the `Travel' head from RBI's balance of payments data.
