Games blame: CBI set to grill Kalmadi anew

12 Jan 2011

The Central Bureau of Investigation is preparing for a fresh round of grilling for Commonwealth Games organising committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi as it has found some anomalies in the statements that have been made by sacked OC official T S Darbari and Kalmadi during previous questioning.

According to reports, the agency has decided to summon Kalmadi next week in connection with his alleged role in the irregularities in conducting the mega-sporting event. They particularly want to question him further on the Queen's Baton Relay.

The reason given for the second round of questioning is that the CBI is not satisfied with the replies by Kalmadi due to gaps and loopholes in his statements regarding the relay.

On scrutiny of various documents by CBI and some statements made by Darbari, some contradictions have been found. The CBI wanted to summon Kalmadi again to resolve these.

Kalmadi has earlier sought to avert blame by saying that all decisions were taken collectively by the OC and not by himself alone.

The CBI has reportedly found that a number of OC documents did not carry the dates on which they were signed. The CBI suspects that the OC had allegedly delayed the award of contracts for various projects in order to benefit a few and inflate rates.
