28 Jul 2009

Construction major Gammon India is likely to be banned from participating any government projects for a period of two years following the Delhi Metro accident that claimed six people on 12 July.

Addressing the Parliament today, urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy said the probe panel has faulted Gammon India for the design and materials used in the construction.

The probe panel headed by IIT-Delhi professor A K Nagpal has found serious deficiency in the design and the cantilever arm, Reddy said, adding, that the concrete used in the construction was also not of adequate strength.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will also blacklist its design consultants and crack down on some senior officials.

The design consultant, Arch Consultancy Services will be blacklisted for five years while the structural consultant, Tandon Consultants will be barred for two years.

Gammon India, which was constructing the central Secretariat-Badarpur line on which the mishap occurred on 12 July, is also the contractor for the Yamuna Bank-Noida stretch of the metro.
