Glenfiddich releases 50-year old malt whisky for £10,000

Makers of Glenfiddich malt whisky, William Grant & Sons Distillers Ltd have put on sale a 50-year-old single malt whisky for £10,000 a bottle, making it to the third most expensive whisky in the world.

William Grant aged the single malt whisky, which had been kept in two casks in the Banffshire distillery's warehouse for 50 years, in the1950s. It was described by Glenfiddich Distillery as "the pinnacle of our whisky-making excellence.

Each bottle is hand-blown and numbered, which is then decorated in Scottish silver and presented in a hand-stitched, leather-bound case. A leather-bound book detailing the whisky's history, with pages for the owner's tasting notes, accompanies each bottle.

From the two casks, the distiller will bottle around 500 units but will release just 50 bottles per year over the next decade.

The two casks containing the single malt whisky has been under the eagle eye of Glenfiddich Distillery's malt master David Stewart, Scotland's longest-serving malt master to be working for the same distiller since 1962.

Buyers will also receive a certificate of authenticity signed by four of the distillery's long-serving craftsmen.
