India's cement production will more than double in 10 years: minister

India's cement industry, the second largest after China, has achieved an installed capacity of 242 million tonnes at present and is targeted to reach 300 million tonnes by 2011-2012 and 600 million tonnes by 2020, minister of state for commerce and industry Jyotiraditya Scindia said.

The cement industry in the country has weathered the economic downturn and recorded a commendable growth of around 8 per cent in two consecutive years - 2007-08 as well as 2008-09,

Addressing the inaugural function of the 11th international seminar on cement and building materials, today, he also complemented the construction industry for the impressive growth achieved by the industry.

Constructuion industry has emerged as the second largest economic activity in India after agriculture and has grown at an annual rate of 9 to 10 per cent, Scindia said.

The 4-day (17-20 November) Seminar is being organised by the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB).

M Vasudeva, director-general of NCB and Vinita Singhania, president of Cement Manufacturers Association of India also addressed the seminar.
