Number of Japanese companies in India up 50 per cent in one year

Mumbai: The number of Japanese companies in India has increased by about 50 per cent to 470 in February 2007 from 320 in January 2006 as more and more Japanese companies set up base in India with an improvement in the investment climate here.

"Japanese establishments in India have grown by 50 per cent in the last one year. The number that stood at 320 last January has crossed 470 in February this year," Japanese ambassador to India Y Enoki said.

Enoki was speaking at a function to confer Nakajima award on National Manufacturing Competitive Council chairman V Krishnamurthy.

The award was given to Krishnamurthy for his efforts to promote Total Productive Management (TPM) Initiative in India.

The award was given by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at a special ceremony organised in Delhi.

TPM is an industry initiative aimed at promoting employee-company relationship through the promotion of soft-skills.

Thanking Japan, and the Japan Institute of Productivity Management (JIPM) in particular, for recognising his efforts,.Krishnamurthy, in his acceptance speech said: "This award is not only a recognition of my efforts but the efforts of the Indian industry in adopting TPM. More particularly, it is the recognition of CII's efforts to spearhead the TPM movement in India."

"India has learnt a lot from Japanese industry and professionals who started coming to India after the Maruti Suziki partnership. They brought along a number of associated companies. Indian manufacturing industry has received tremendous support and help from Japan," said. Krishnamurthy.
