Hyderabad: The Right Livelihood Awards, also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize, will be held in the city this year and the names of the winners for the year 2004 will be announced.

Founded in Sweden 25 years ago, this is the first time that the awards are being held outside the European country.

Baron Jakob Von Uexkull, chairman of the international Jury, will unveil the names of the winners on September 20. The jury will meet at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) on September 15-16 followed by a symposium on "Millennial reflections on right livelihood alternatives for the 21st century". The Swedish Ambassador to India would be the chief guest at the event.

The Right Livelihood Awards are presented by the Swedish Houses of Parliament in December every year. The awards are given for community level contributions in development, human rights, ecology, renewable energy and gender empowerment.

Some of the participants at the symposium would be the South Asian award winners like Medha Patkar of the Narmada Bachao Andolan; Sunderlal Bahaguna of the Chipko movement, Ela Bhatt of SEWA and Zafrullah Chowdhury of Bangladesh.
