Information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday gave a big push to social media by asking his colleagues in the NDA ministry to tap the powers of new media to better connect with the people.

The Narendra Modi-led government, known for its active use of the new media in its election campaign, wants to ensure that its connect with the people continues even after assuming power.

Javadekar has written to all central ministries to disseminate their policy initiatives through the communication hub under the existing New Media Wing of the I&B ministry.

In his letter, Javadekar asked all ministries to liaise with the New Media Wing, which will cater to all its needs, such as disseminating information through packaging and placing of content, wider reach through variety of tools and response management.

The government believes that a two-way interaction envisaged in this endeavour would provide a 360 degree communication approach.

In conformity with drive to ensure transparent and responsive government, minister of state for commerce and industry (independent charge) Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday launched `@CimGOI', the official Twitter handle of the ministry of commerce and industry.

''Following the government's commitment to engage with people directly, we will harness the technology. I will communicate the initiatives and programmes of my ministry through this handle,'' said Sitharaman. The Twitter handle of the ministry will let the people know about the important developments taking place, she added.
