LDK Solar to process 20,000 MT of solar silicones to Germany's Q-Cells

12 Sep 2008

China's multicrystalline wafers maker LDK Solar Co. Ltd. today said it had signed an 11-year agreement with leading German solar cell maker Q-Cells AG to process solar-grade silicon into wafers, a week after it announced signing an 8-year contract with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation to supply 750 MW of multicrystalline silicon wafers.

Based in Xinyu City, China, LDK, said it will process at least 20,000 metric tons of solar grade silicon provided by Q-Cells between 2008 and 2018 with an option to process an additional 21,000 metric tons in the same decade.

The agreement is part of a memorandum of understanding that calls for LDK Solar to supply the German company with up to 5 GW of multicrystalline solar wafers between 2009 and 2018.

Earlier in April it enetered into a 10-year deal to 640 MW of multicrystalline solar wafers to Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Ltd in India.

LDK manufactures and sells multicrystaline solar wafers, the main raw materials used to produce solar cells. LDK sells multicrystalline wafers globally to manufacturers of photovoltaic products, including solar cells and solar modules.

It also provides wafer processing services to manufacturers of monocrystalline and multicrystalline solar cells and modules.
