Mumbai: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has discovered gas off the Andhra Pradesh coast, in the ninth well drilled in GS-15 prospect, 15km off Amalapuram coast. The present discovery was made South-west of the Ravva gas field and the corporation feels that even oil could be found there.

An ONGC spokesman said, "While most of it is gas, the lower level indicates an oil leg." An oil leg refers to the oil under a gas basin.

An evaluation of the discovery is under way. An estimate of the quantity and quality of both oil and gas would be available by the end of the first week of July.

The well, which was spudded, on May 28, has a target depth of 2,500 metres. The drilling operations indicate a 45-metre high hydrocarbon column between 1,684 metres and 1,760 metres.

ONGC has five rigs in the eastern offshore. Two chartered and one of ONGC's own rigs are prospecting for oil and gas in deep waters.
