Pawar against bringing BCCI under RTI Act

The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has come out against the government's sports bill that seeks to put the sports body under the Right To Information (RTI) Act and bring accountability among sports bodies.

President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Sharad Pawar said he has some reservations about certain aspects of the bill while BCCI member Anurag Thakur said the government should not worry about BCCI as it is the most organised and professional sports body in India and should instead focus on building sports infrastructure.

BCCI vice-president and minister of states for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Shukla, however, did not comment on the bill.

The union cabinet will discuss the new sports bill prepared by the ministry of sports and youth affairs and if approved, will be introduced in Parliament in the ongoing monsoon session.

Minister of sports Ajay Maken has said the National Sports Development Bill, if passed, will make sports bodies more transparent and accountable.

Maken said the bill does not seek to control BCCI and only aims at bringing accountability to the cricket board.
