RIM to provide recorded BlackBerry data to Indian authorities: report

17 Nov 2010

BlackBerry smartphone maker Research In Motion (RIM) is reported to have agreed to give Indian authorities recorded data from the phone's messaging services, stopping short of facilitating a ready and lawful tracking of the service.

Reports quoting unnamed sources in the government said the Canadian mobile phone manufacturer and the Indian authorities are now closer to an agreement on lawful access and monitoring of BlackBerry's highly-secure corporate email service.

"They have in principle agreed to provide us recorded data from their servers," the report quoted an official of the home ministry as saying.

The report said the solution was hammered out during the course of a tripartite meeting of RIM executives, home ministry officials and intelligence agencies.

RIM would deliberate on the issue within and find a way to meet India's demands. However, the company has agreed to give Indian authorities live access to BlackBerry enterprise server at a later date, the report quoted the home ministry official as saying.

The assurance comes after a series of meetings of RIM executives and officials of the home ministry, Intelligence Bureau and the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).
