Vishwaroopam effect: Panel set up to review Cinematograph Act

The central government today announced the setting up of a judicial committee to review the Cinematograph Act, so as to make it robust and ensure that movies do not get stuck after clearances by the film Central Board of Film Certification.

The 8-member committee, headed by retired Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Mukul Mudgal has film personalities such as Sharmila Tagore, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Leela Samson and noted poet and MP Javed Akhtar as members.

Film Federation of India president L Suresh, lawyer Rameeza Kakim and Raghvendra Singh, joint secretary in the I&B ministry are the other members of the committee.

The committee will review the process of film certification, including the need to have special categories of certification for broadcasting on TV and radio.

The committee has been asked to suggest measures to strength regulation so as to deal with ''contemporary requirements of film certification'' and submit its report within two months.

The committee was set up by in the light of the Tamil Nadu government securing a ban on Kamal Haasan film 'Viswaroop' through the high court after the censor board had cleared the film.
