Asos dismisses speculation over bid by Amazon

25 Oct 2012

The chief executive of fashion-apparel firm Asos has dismissed recent speculation about a potential bid for the online fashion retailer from Amazon, the London Evening Standard reports.

London Evening Standard quoted, Nick Robertson as saying that he had not spoken to Amazon or [its chief executive] Jeff Bezos for three years. His comments come after reports during the weekend that the internet retail giant had considered a bid for Asos, which posted a sharp spike in profits today, the newspaper said.

Asos, co-founded by Robertson in 2000, had been boosted by improved growth in the UK with its profits soaring 40 per cent to £44.5 million over the year to 31 August.

Robertson said, the UK had bounced back and the company was quietly confident this would continue.

Asos reported a 13 per cent leap in UK sales to £81.7 million over the five months to the end of August, a 10 per cent growth over the 12 months.

According to Robertson, there were not many in UK retail growing at double-digit sales.
