Novell says it will unveil next week the industry's first cloud computing security service that provides identity and access management for hosted applications and hosted storage. The new service will be unveiled at the upcoming Burton Group Catalyst Conference, between 29-31 July in San Diego.

The Novell cloud security service is a product of more than 60 cloud-related patents and patent applications. It will enable cloud providers and software as a service vendors to ensure their offerings meet the strict security and compliance standards required by global businesses.

The five-day Catalyst conference will explores cutting-edge ideas, current challenges as well as emerging technologies shaping today's and tomorrow's enterprise.

Talking about the service, Dyke Hensen, chief marketing officer, PivotLink, one of the selected customers for a beta testing, said, "Novell's service allows us to extend this model by integrating PivotLink's application and data level security into the overall framework, offering security assurance and trust that is unmatched in cloud computing."

The cloud security service is based on 'annexation technology', which enables businesses to treat the cloud as a natural extension of their data centre by delivering single sign-on capabilities using a federated enterprise identity model. It allows the confident use of cloud applications and assets with the assurance that specific corporate security policies and regulatory concerns will be enforced in the cloud.

Cloud computing offers the benefit of an on-demand model that enables enterprises to use the cloud only when the business requires more computing power. Thus, many enterprises can share the same physical computing capacity, using it at different times.
