Though Facebook can certainly boast of more users, in the arena of social media though no platform is now more important in communicating public messages than Twitter. The micro-blogging site has now also decided to expand its reach with the addition of the facility to email tweets from its website.

The company has also boosted its iPhone and Android apps and additionally enhanced its search results.

Though users can email tweets to anyone not using the service, with many Twitter apps, the new option would be embedded directly into the Twitter.com website as a standard option. The feature would appear in a new "More" icon next to the current "Favorite" option (similar to the interface on the current Twitter mobile app), and would instantly open an email window.

When a tweet is emailed from the mobile device of a user, the "From" address is typically the default email address of the user's device, but the emails would be sent directly from Twitter. It is not clear though as to whether or not an option to add the user's own email as the "Sender" would be available.

"You can email a Tweet to anyone, whether they use Twitter or not, right from your Twitter stream or from the details view of any Tweet," a Twitter engineer wrote in a blog post. "You can add your own comment, and we'll send an email with your comment and the Tweet together. Just like that."

Currently, Twitter has around 500 million users, which though impressive number, is still much behind that of Facebook at 1 billion worldwide. With the new email option, Twitter would be able to significantly increase its user base according to industry experts.
