Stock markets start Samvat 2081 with broad gains in Muharat trading

Samvat 2081 started on a high note with stocks gaining across segments in Diwali Muhurat Trading on Friday, adding Rs3.26 lakh crore to market capitalisation of companies.

The 30-stock BSE Sensex closed 335 points higher at 79,724.12, while the NSE Nifty50 closed 0.41 per cent higher at 24,304.35, with 42 of its 50 component stocks making gains.

The one-hour trading between 6 pm and 7 pm lifted the total market capitalisation of all BSE-listed companies by Rs3.26 lakh crore to Rs447.97 lakh crore.

Muhurat trading was unaffected by the previous day’s losses brought about by offloading of shares worth Rs5,813.30 crore by foreign institutional investors (FIIs).

The FII sale had pushed BSE Sensex down 553.12 points (0.69 per cent) and the NSE Nifty50 by 135.50 points (0.56 per cent) on Thursday.

Over the full Samvat 2080, which ended on Thursday, the BSE Sensex added 14,484.38 points, or 22.31 per cent, while the NSE Nifty50 gained 4,780 points, or 24.60 per cent.

Foreign institutional investors have offloaded stocks worth Rs1,04,018.94 crore in the cash segment in October alone.

On the commodity market, however, gold and silver prices ended marginally lower on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) during the Muhurat trading session on Friday. Gold was down Rs89 (0.11 per cent) at Rs78,778 per 10 grams while silver closed Rs23 (0.02 per cent) down at Rs95,460 per kg.
