Markets see fresh bouts of sell-off; Nifty below 4200 again

At 14:58 hrs IST, the markets were seeing fresh waves of selling, which pulled the Nifty below the 4100 mark again and inching back to day's low. The sell-off in shares of banking, capital goods, realty, technology, oil & gas exploration, power and metal stocks was putting pressure on the markets.

In the midcap space, fertiliser stocks were extremely under pressure. However, cement, oil marketing and select auto companies' shares were witnessing buying interest.

The Nifty was down 126 points, to 4,075 and the Sensex fell 410 points, to 13,759. The broader indices declined 3% each. About 626 shares advanced while 2074 shares declined on the BSE. Nearly 456 shares were unchanged.

All sectoral indices turned red again; the BSE Realty Index lost 7.8%. Bank and Capital Goods indices slipped 4-4.8%. Metal, Power, IT and TECk indices tanked 2-3.7%. Oil & Gas was down 1.7%.

Top losers - Tata Steel was at Rs 364.50, down 8.44%; Sterlite Industries was at Rs 547, down 8.22%; DLF was at Rs 286.95, down 6.86%; L&T was at Rs 1,401, down 6.65%; Reliance Infrastructure was at Rs 1,081, down 6.5%; Suzlon Energy was at Rs 87.20, down 10.61%; Unitech was at Rs 69.15, down 9.67%; HCL Tech was at Rs 168.70, down 8.29% and Reliance Capital was at Rs 763.90, down 7.9%.

Top gainers - ACC was at Rs 786, up 3.09%; Maruti Suzuki was at Rs 1,101.20, up 1.97%; NTPC was at Rs 195.65, up 1.35%; Grasim was at Rs 2,449.20, up 1.35%; Tata Motors was at Rs 283.30, up 1.23%; BPCL was at Rs 464.55, up 4.30%; Ambuja Cements was at Rs 93.80, up 2.46% and Hero Honda was at Rs 1,465, up 1.97%.
