Nifty ends below 5450; metal, realty, cap goods down 1 per cent

The Nifty slipped in late trade today to close the session below 5450 with loss of 1%. Metal, realty, capital goods, pharma stocks witnessed heavy selling pressure. While Reliance, Infosys, ICICI Bank, L&T and SBI were the negative contributors to the Sensex.
The Sensex was down 129.16 points or 0.71% at 18037.87, and the Nifty was down 33.80 points or 0.62% at 5418.30. About 1351 shares advanced, 1714 shares declined and 312 shares remained unchanged.
Top losers on the bourses were Cipla, Suzlon Energy, Cairn India, Reliance Infra, Jaiprakash Asso, Reliance Comm and ICICI Bank.
The total traded turnover of the markets stood at Rs 1,23,854.7 crore. This included Rs 15,937.54 crore from the NSE cash segment, Rs 1,02,320.78 crore from the NSE F&O and the balance Rs 5,596.38 crore from the BSE cash segment.
Vedanta-Cairn Deal
Vedanta Resources Plc will acquire a 51-61% equity stake in Cairn India for approximately USD 8.5-9.6 billion via debt and cash, the company said on Monday. Anil Agarwal-promoted Vedanta, which owns Sterlite Industries, Hindustan Zinc and Sesa Goa said it would hold 31-40% directly in Cairn India and 20% of the stake will be held by Sesa Goa.
