Nifty surges; ONGC, Sterlite Ind, GAIL gain

The market was trading with good gains but off the day's high. The NSE Nifty was trading sniffing distance from 5400 mark. Oil & gas, metals and banking, capital goods, pharma and realty stocks were moved up. The broader indices were trading with marginal gains.
Reliance ICICI Bank, L&T, HDFC Bank and TCS were the major contributors to the Sensex.
At 13.28 hrs IST, the Sensex was up 132.86 points or 0.74% at 17980.10, and the Nifty was up 41.55 points or 0.78% at 5390.50.
The market breath was positive; about 1516 shares have advanced, 1089 shares declined, and 1038 shares remained unchanged.
ONGC was the top gainer on the Sensex; the stock was trading at Rs 273.60 up 4.17% followed by Sterlite Ind at Rs 166.40 up 2.62%, NTPC at Rs 171.10 up 2.06%, Reliance at Rs 924.85 up 1.99% and Tata Steel at Rs 572 up 1.87%.
However, top losers on the Sensex were M&M at Rs 668.40 down 1.82%, ITC at Rs 187.50 down 0.79%, Infosys at Rs 2,776 down 0.68%, BHEL at Rs 1,914.20 down 0.35% and HDFC at Rs 642.55 down 0.32%.
