Sensex ends below 20K; metal, FMCG, oil & gas tumble

It was a lacklustre day for the markets as the Sensex closed below its psychological mark of 20,000. The turnover was on the higher side, considering that futures and options contracts will expire tomorrow. Heavy selling was seen in metal, FMCG and oil & gas stocks. However, auto and IT stocks witnessed some buying interest.
Reliance, Infosys, SBI, TCS, Tata Motors were positive contributors to the bourses while ICICI Bank, L&T, ITC, HDFC, HDFC Bank, ONGC and Sterlite Ind were negative contributors.
In the currencies market, the rupee rose to a fresh four-and-half month high on Wednesday boosted by broad weakness in the dollar against major currencies.
In commodities, Gold powered to another record above USD 1,311 an ounce on Wednesday, its ninth record-high session this month
The Sensex was down 148.52 points or 0.74% at 19956.34, and the Nifty was down 38.20 points or 0.63% at 5991.30.
About 1176 shares have advanced, 1897 shares declined, and 328 shares are unchanged.
