IIT Ropar team develops mechanical device for post-surgical knee rehabilitation

Researchers at IIT Ropar have developed a mechanical solution that makes continuous passive motion (CPM) therapy after knee replacement surgery more efficient.

The machine developed by the IIT Ropar team is fully mechanical in its functioning and does not require any external inputs or electricity for operation.

IIT Ropar has obtained a patent (No 553407) for the fully mechanical passive motion knee rehabilitation machine.

Currently available CPM machines are motorised and require electricity to operate and are generally expensive.

The new mechanical solution uses a piston and pulley system to store air, which in turn helps the user to control motion in a way that aids knee rehabilitation.

By doing away with the need to use electricity, the machine makes continuous passive motion therapy possible even in areas where electricity is unreliable or not available at all.

The machine is also lightweight and portable, which allows users to carry it where ever they want and, in a way, also reduces prolonged hospitalisation and post-surgery visits.

Continuous passive motion therapy is important for patients recovering from knee surgeries to restore joint mobility.

The development of this mechanical CPM device could significantly improve access to healthcare, especially for people in far off places without direct access to healthcare facilities.

The device is expected to have a global market as it is cheap and easy to operate.
