Disclosing car fuel efficiency to be mandatory from 1 October: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi: From 1 October 2010, car buyers will have clear information as to how much mileage is offered by each car on display.
Announcing this at the annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) on Thursday, environment minister Jairam Ramesh said voluntary fuel-efficiency labelling would begin by October this year and will become mandatory from next year.
India's fuel efficiency standards are ready and will soon be notified as part of the Energy Conservation Act, 2002.
Pawan Goenka, the president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said the fuel efficiency label on cars would provide information to consumers on the comparative fuel efficiency of vehicles in different categories.
He said consumers will then be able to make the right choice of vehicles depending on their individual needs. This would encourage and promote lower fuel consumption.
He said that while the auto industry was initially reluctant to reveal the mileage figures, it is prepared to disclose these accurately.
