Car, two-wheeler sales rise

Passenger car sales rose 8.34 per cent in January to 84,235 units from 77,744 units in the same month last year. Motorcycle sales rose to 499,333 units from 435,665 a year ago. The numbers were released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers today.
Car sales in April-January, the first ten months of the fiscal year to March 2006, rose to 707,901 units from 668,382 a year earlier, the society said in a statement.
Maruti, Tata Motors, Ford and Honda reported increasing sales, but Hyundai's monthly sales fell to 11,631 units in January 2006 from 14,540 units in January 2005.
Sales of commercial vehicles -- trucks and buses -- stood at 34,037 units, up from 29,634 in the same month a year earlier, while sales in April-January were 271,979 units against 252,919 year on year.
Sales in April-January were up to 4,781,917 units against 4,102,939 bikes a year earlier.
