Dubai: Air India Express, the Indian flag carrier Air India's low cost subsidiary, has announced its decision to cancel operations to the west Indian state of Goa. This has come as a shock to passengers as the carrier had opened seat bookings just a week earlier.

The service was meant to cater to the community of 500,000 Goans who work in the UAE.

Express officials said those passengers who had already booked their tickets will get full refund or have alternative arrangements made for their travel.

The budget airline was scheduled to operate three flights a week to Goa from 18 June.

Indian, which used to operate three direct flights a week to the state, had stopped operations due to low seat bookings as of 30 March. Public pressure, however, forced Indian to restore operations at a frequency of twice a week.

The main reason for Air India Express and other airlines to stop operations to Goa is the factor of load sustainability once the peak season comes to an end.
