Air India’s half-year results show distinct improvement

The turnaround plan initiated by national carrier Air India during the current financial year (2010-2011) seems to be bearing results, with the airline reporting improved performance on all parameters.

A statement by the airline says that during the six-month period April–November 2010, its network revenue grew by 22.6 per cent to Rs7,250 crore as against Rs5,911 crore the previous year.

Out of the total network revenue, Rs4,401 crore  was recorded on international flights, a growth of 15.8 per cent over the previous Rs3,801 crore, while on domestic flights it jumped 35 per cent to Rs2,849 crore in April-November 2010 against Rs2,110 crore last year.

According to Arvind Jadhav, chairman and managing director, ''The results are very encouraging and reflect the commitment of our employees. We have just begun the turnaround journey and we have a long way to go.''

The number of passengers carried improved by 13.3 per cent during the period from 7.99 million to 9.05 million. On its international network, passenger traffic improved by 3.5 per cent to 3.74 million passengers against 3.61 million passengers last year, while on its domestic network, it grew 21.4 per cent to 5.32 million from 4.38 million.

Further, the airline registered an overall passenger load factor (PLF) of 66.3 per cent against 63.1 per cent in the same period last year. While on its international network, the PLF increased to 65 per cent  from 62.2 per cent, on its domestic network, it went to 70.4 per cent from 66.2 per cent.
