AirAsia plans to start its low cost Indian airline, in a joint venture with Tata Sons and Telstra, by September with two aircraft, Suhaila Hassan, group head flight attendant, AirAsia Malaysia, told reporters in Chennai at the start of the new venture's recruitment drive for cabin crew.

''The way things are going looks like we will start operations in September provided we get all the necessary approvals," added Bo Lingam, chief operating officer of AirAsia.

The registration for candidates started just before 9 am and saw overwhelming response, with candidates from all over India arriving from at around 7.30 am.

"About 700 people have attended the interview in just an hour. We are expecting 5,000 candidates," said Hassan.

To begin with, the airline plans to hire around 100 cabin crew.

Candidates should be between 20 and 32 and "fit the AirAsia uniform".

Suhaila said the age group they were looking for was 20-32 and most important factor was they needed to "fit into the AirAsia uniform".

On Friday, the airline announced it wanted India-based captains and first officers (co-pilots) for the joint venture. Pilots have to apply online by 19 April, and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in Bangalore.
