Kuala Lumpur: In less than 24 hours of its Free Seats campaign, pioneering low budget Malaysian carrier, Air Asia, sold at least 300,000 seats. In the process the campaign also racked up a few records, registering 300 million hits on its website in less than 11 hours.

The campaigns tag line says simply: ''The seats are FREE. Pay for what's left and be on your way.''

The airline's regional commercial head Kathleen Tan said Air Asia's server capacity had been doubled to cope with the congestion. "The rush for the free seats is a real testament that today's consumers are online savvy and embracing the low-cost revolution happening in Asia," she said.

Besides India and China, the low-cost carrier is giving away till Sunday a million free seats to more than 70 destinations in Taiwan, Indonesia and Thailand.

"For those who have not been able to make a booking, we urge them to be patient and keep trying as there are still 700,000 free seats available up to Nov 15," Tan said.

Tan noted that the offer has broken two new world records whereby the website registered a phenomenal 300,000,000 hits in the first 11 hours of the campaign, and sold over 300,000 seats in less than 24 hours.
